11th March 2003 Visa USA has announced a new initiative in the fight against identity theft, as the problem reaches epidemic levels. All Visa merchants in the US have been ordered to block out most of card users' credit card numbers on till receipts and displays, in an attempt to stop fraudulent use of credit cards. The move follows similar initiatives with other vendors, including Mastercard, which have begun to programme systems to display only the last four digits of credit card numbers. Retailers accepting Visa cards in the US have been given until July 2006 to make the change and POS terminals with software to obscure the credit card details will only become available in July this year. During 2002, the US Federal Trade Commission received 161,819 reports of identity theft, compared to 86,198 in 2001 and 31,117 in 2000.   << Back
